The ticking of the clock taunted her as Ava sat patiently at her desk waiting for 11:30 a.m. to get here. That was when she’d be leaving her office. That was when she’d race in her car to meet Leo for their lunch date.

Was it even that kind of date though? Obviously, it would have to be work-related. She knew he didn’t find her the least bit attractive. She’d seen the skanks he’d run off with. But come to think of it, Leo hadn’t mentioned any hoochie sluts lately. Nor had he brought them up in their conversation like he had that one time after she had talked to him about when she first had hooked up with Ron.

Ava wondered. Why the hell was Detective Leo Alexander, better known as Xander by his friends, single? Was something wrong with him? Did he have commitment issues? Surely, the women weren’t blind. Those gorgeous, penetrating, green eyes, that muscular toned body, visible even through his work clothes, that panty melting stare that only intensified when he smiled… God, he was fucking sexy. He’d definitely be enough to make Ava forget all about Ron altogether. Ron who?

Ava shook her head, and as the time on her laptop turned from 11:29 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., she shot up from her chair and darted out of her office. Thankfully, she had checked and primped herself in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in the ladies’ room only ten minutes ago. What the fuck was she so nervous for? This wasn’t an actual date. Leo didn’t want anything more than friendship with her.

As she sped down the hallway, she waved at a few of her fellow co-workers who were drowning in paperwork. Ava prayed she wouldn’t run into Julie and could get past the reception desk unnoticed. She had no time to waste.

“Ms. Ross,” an older voice belonging to a male announced, making her spin on her heels. It was undoubtedly Dan, her boss. His distinguishable raspy voice from prior years spent vigorously inhaling the toxic fumes of the cancer stick had left their mark. Even though he’d quit smoking ten years ago, certain damages were permanent.

“Yes, Dan?” Ava flashed him a polite smile, wishing he’d hurry and get to the point. She didn’t want to be late.

“How are you doing, Ava? I’d like to sit down with you and go over the specifics of a new case that just landed on my desk this morning.” He shuffled his weight foot to foot, running a hand through his thick, white mane.

Fuck, not today, Satan!

Ava bit her tongue. Getting fired was not a luxury she could afford. The bills came in, month after month, and there was no way she’d spend the rest of her life bumming off of Charlie. As much as she loved being there, she knew she’d soon need to find her own space.

“Sure. If it can wait awhile, I just have to get to a lunch… appointment, then I’ll stop back in your office, and you can fill me in.
